Orioles fall to Millers

By Jake Thompson

— The visiting Noblesville Millers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on Avon last Friday night en route  to a 4-1 victory over their Hoosier Crossroads Conference rivals. The two squads met again Saturday, this time in Noblesville, but the result was the same. The Millers downed the Orioles 3-2.

Both games were very close and could have gone either way, but according to Avon coach Troy Drosche one factor continues to impede the Orioles.

“We’re just not hitting the ball consistently through the game or lineup and that’s been hurting us the last few games,” Drosche said. “We know we have a good baseball team, but we’ve got to hit more consistently. Our pitching this year has been really good. When we hit the ball, we’re a very good team.”

Tasker Strobel went five and two-thirds innings and struck out eight while Specncer Black closed.

Avon’s Cole Johnson and Dylan Jones each had two hits Friday night, a single and a double.

The Orioles gave up two runs in the first inning and one each in the third and fourth innings and trailed 4-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Avon scored one run but could not overcome the deficit, falling 4-1.

Saturday’s game was closer, but the Orioles again allowed the Millers to jump on top. Noblesville scored a run in each of the first two innings and added a third in the fourth for a 3-0 advantage.

Avon responded like Friday night, scoring two runs in the seventh, but could not get any closer.

Jones recorded one hit for a double as Chandler Sanburn and Khristian Reynolds each scored for the Orioles. Johnson and Strobel each recorded hits for Avon while Sanburn tallied two.

The loss dropped Avon to 11-9 on the season and the Orioles now sit 4-8 in HCC play.
