Bulldogs drop third straight, 37-13

BROWNSBURG – Despite 130 yards on 26 carries and a touchdown by Toks Akinribade, Brownsburg fell to visiting Westfield 37-13 Friday night.

“We are disappointed in a loss, whether one phase were to work or not,” said Brownsburg coach Brett Comer, whose squad dropped to 1-3 on the season. “You have to play all three phases in the (Hoosier Crossroads Conference) and we were unable to do that. We have a lot of new kids playing, but it’s time for them to step up and make plays and stop making excuses.”

Westfield (3-1) got off to a quick start, scoring on the fourth play of the game, as Frank Grimes ran 58 yards for a touchdown.

Westfield recovered the ensuing kickoff, and followed with a 37-yard field goal to take a 10-point lead before Brownsburg even touched the ball on offense.

After a Brownsburg three-and-out, Westfield scored again on a 33-yard pass from Nick Ferrer to Davin Reece.

On the following possession, Brownsburg had its most sustained drive of the night, going 86 yards in 19 plays. However, the drive came up empty, as the Bulldogs were unable to punch it in on fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard line.

Westfield responded by going 93 yards on a drive capped by a Ferrer-to-Reece connection of 42 yards.

Ferrer and Reece completed the first half hat trick with a 3-yard TD with 18 seconds remaining, as Westfield took a 30-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Brownsburg took the ball down to the Westfield 4-yard line, before Turner Edwards intercepted a Hunter Johnson pass and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown to make it 37-0.

“(The red zone defense was) huge,” Westfield coach Jake Gilbert said. “We work it like crazy, but this was the first week that I felt like we really made plays down there. We stuffed them once and got a 100-yard interception return. The red zone was why we lost last week and arguably why we won this week.”

Brownsburg eventually got on the board with a 47-yard touchdown run by Akinribade. Devonte Allen also scored on a 6-yard run with just under four minutes remaining in the game.

“It was nice to score touchdowns because it has been a little while,” Comer said. “It was nice to see our guys move up and down the field.”

Brownsburg will look to rebound when they battle rival Avon next Friday night.

Avon’s Patrick Rodgers made the cut at last week’s RBC Canadian Open at Royal Montreal Golf Club, and was a solid 4-under par on holes 1-11 over the weekend. It was the remaining holes that were the problem, as he went 7-over on those to finish at even-par and tied for 62nd place.
