Orioles take county championship

BROWNSBURG — Before the season, Avon baseball coach Troy Drosche said the Orioles’ bats would determine how successful they’d be.

The bats blasted away at Plainfield and Danville on Saturday, as Avon rolled to consecutive wins and the Hendricks County tournament title.

The Orioles started with a 7-2 win over the Quakers, and capped the tourney with a 12-3 beating of the Warriors.

“They’re coming around, and if we can continue to hit the baseball consistently, we’re going to be a pretty good team,” Drosche said. “This was very important for our school and program, something we take pride in. It was definitely one of our goals to win this championship, and it prepares us for our conference season.”

The blowout ending to the week was far from what Danville wanted, but the Warriors went 2-1 in the tournament, including a 3-2 upset of Class 4A No. 8 Brownsburg on its home field on Saturday.

“To beat Brownsburg, who’s second to none in baseball and who’s won this so many times, was huge for our kids and our program,” Danville coach Brady Armstrong said. “We played the kind of baseball we’re capable of against them."

Tanner Brandt and Austin Natalie drove in runs in the first inning to put Avon up 3-0 over Danville, and the Orioles later exploded for seven runs in the fifth, as Brandt, Natalie, Nick Handlon and Mitch Ubelhor had RBI.

Avon almost finished it in the bottom of the fifth, but a passed ball on the third strike of the third out extended the game, and Danville followed with three runs.

“We did a lot of great things today, but there are areas we need to work on,” Drosche said. “We preach about playing a complete game, and there’s still some things to fix to get us ready for the rest of the season.”

Avon’s Patrick Rodgers made the cut at last week’s RBC Canadian Open at Royal Montreal Golf Club, and was a solid 4-under par on holes 1-11 over the weekend. It was the remaining holes that were the problem, as he went 7-over on those to finish at even-par and tied for 62nd place.
