Bruins stay hot with conference win

Tri-West moves to 7-1

LIZTON —  The Tri-West and Danville softball teams met in conference and county play at Tri-West High School Thursday night.

The game, which was originally scheduled at Danville, was moved to Tri-West in order to both play the currently scheduled game and resume their game from Tuesday night that was rain delayed.

The Bruins won the first 12-2 in five innings and the second 7-3, but needed extra innings to do so.

In the second game, with a stalemate through three innings Tri-West struck first in the top of the fourth. The Bruins were able to put three runs on the board with three consecutive RBI. The hits came off the bats of senior Heather Chastain, junior Samme Miller and sophomore Marita VanDyke.

Before the inning came to an end, the Warriors were able to close the score with a 2 RBI double from senior Katie Rigdon and trailed 3-2.

In the fifth, Danville was able to add one more run to even the score at three with a RBI single from junior Kathryn Butterfield.

The game remained knotted throughout the remainder of the regulation and went to the eighth and deciding frame.

With the extra inning on the way, Danville pitcher junior Hannah Kelly was entering her 12th inning on the day. Kelly was needed to pitch the final four innings of the makeup game and all eight of the second game.

Danville coach Jennifer Chasteen knew that was a lot of work but had no other alternatives as her other pitcher was injured.

“The way (Kelly) pitched the first game to come back and pitch the way she did with seeing all of the batters she did, I’m super proud of her,” Chasteen said. “I couldn’t have asked for more out of her.”

In the top of the eighth, the Bruins came out with back-to-back singles from Chastain and Miller, respectively. The pair advanced to third and second base off a wild pitch. A bunt by senior Kaitlyn Settlemoir loaded the bases.
