Danville swim teams spilt with WeBo

By Justin Whitaker

DANVILLE — The Danville girls’ and boys’ swimming teams spilt last night against Sagamore Conference opponent Western Boone.

The Warrior girls were victorious 104-81 and the Danville boys fell 106-75.

First-year coach Leah Miller was satisfied with the performance of both squads, especially the girls.

“I couldn’t more pleased with how the girls did,” Miller said.

The 200 medley relay team of Renae Schuldt, Isabelle Mitchell, Anna Eschbach and Carly Kroll won the first event of the night.

In the 50 free, Danville had three of the top four finishers with Eschbach winning, freshman Kendall Startzman in third and Kroll in fourth.

Senior Claire Hazelton won the 100 butterfly and Eschbach won the 100 free.

Eschbach racked up her fourth total victory of the night as a member of the 200 free relay with Mitchell and Carly and Sydney Kroll.

The Warriors also notched a second place in the 200 free relay with the team of Startzman, Hannah Weiss, Drew Armfield and Heather Carman.

Sophomore Sydney Kroll rounded out the Danville victories with a first place finish in the 100 backstroke.

“We had a lot of good swims, especially the 50 freestylers, every one of them, it was very, very good. Our 100 freestyle was good and our 100 backstrokers were awesome tonight.”

The girls are looking forward to Saturday’s county meet at Avon. Danville know what is expected out of them and Miller’s goal is simple, go fast.

“They know what I want from them and they know that Saturday we need to be on our A game and going fast,” she said.

While the boys didn’t win against Western Boone, Miller was satisified with their performance.

“I honestly cannot ask anything more from them. We’ve been swimming extremely, extremely hard in preparation for Saturday,” Miller said. “We had a couple good swims, we had a couple off swims tonight but you have to roll with the punches.”

Miller liked the performance of her sophomore winner of the 200 IM, Devon Berg and the 200 free relay team of Berg, Matt Neilson, Austin Stewart and Grant Callahan.

In the 200 free relay, Callahan and Neilson had just finished the 500 free where they finished second and third respectively.

The 200 free relay team of Berg, Neilson, Stewart and Callahan also won the 200 medley relay eariler in the night.

Callahan also added a 100 breaststroke victory on the evening.

Junior Kasey Hedrick won diving with a final score of 177.65 and sophomore Eli Alexander came in second with a final score of 158.85.

Heading into the county meet Saturday, Miller and the Warrior boys know what they need to do.

“A lot of them have all ready told me ‘this is who I need to beat Saturday, this is what I need to go,’” she said.
