No. 2 Orioles move on, Quakers' season ends

BROWNSBURG — One county team continued its season while another’s came to a close at Thursday’s Class 4A Brownsburg volleyball sectional.

No. 2 Avon beat No. 18 Martinsville, 23-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-18, in an emotionally-charged match between two top-flight squads.

“I don’t think we played to our game plan a lot of the time, but we executed and were able to push through in a match we knew would be a dogfight,” Avon coach Scott McQueen said.

Meanwhile, Plainfield ended its season with a 25-21, 25-17, 25-21 loss to Terre Haute North.

“We lost to them earlier in the year but we were pretty neck-and-neck,” Plainfield coach Melany Rarey said. “You saw a little bit of that tonight, then we had serve-receive problems and had a hard time staying confident and picking up momentum.”

Plainfield (21-12) led at various points in the first set, the last time at 15-14. Despite a kill by Mallory Wright that kept the Quakers alive, North finished the set by scoring four of the final five points.

North jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set, and led by as many as 10 before tallying an eight-point final margin. Tristyn Ross had a solid third set, but it wasn’t enough, as Plainfield saw its successful campaign end.

“We finished better than last year (18-15) and improved during the season,” Rarey said. “We know there’s so much more potential in that locker room, we just have to train hard and improve in the mental game.”

In the nightcap, Avon was tested early, as Martinsville’s digs and blocks helped the Artesians win the first set by a narrow two-point margin. The second set was equally tight until Avon put together a 9-1 spurt to take a 21-13 lead. Two well-placed dink shots by Lindsay Thompson and a thunderous kill by Calle Weddle put the set away.
