Hot-shooting Royals down Bulldogs 62-40

BROWNSBURG —  Class 4A No. 6 Hamilton Southeastern got off to great starts in the first and second halves, and steamrolled No. 3 Brownsburg in the fourth quarter in a 62-40 road victory Friday night.

“We weren’t as disciplined as we needed to be to win a game of this magnitude,” Brownsburg coach Steve Lynch said. “Our effort was there, but when you make mistakes to give a team that good of opportunities, and they shoot like they did, we just have to learn and build from it.”

Zach Gunn and Tyler Jenkins tallied 19 points apiece for HSE, which took sole possession of first place in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference.

“We knew it was a big game from a conference standpoint with both teams undefeated,” HSE coach Brian Satterfield said. “We’re sitting in the driver’s seat with still a lot of games left. It feels good to get this one, especially against such a good team.”

After cutting a 17-point deficit to 42-36 going into the fourth quarter, Brownsburg was outscored 20-4 in the final period.

“We had it to six and were pretty motivated in the huddles, but we just didn’t get it done,” Lynch said.

Mason Hankins had two of HSE’s three 3-pointers that put the Royals up 9-0 three minutes into the contest. HSE (11-2, 5-0) hit 4 of 5 from long-range in the opening period, while Brownsburg shot 3 of 9 from the floor in digging a 21-9 hole.

After HSE took a 24-11 lead, K.J. Walton scored six straight points for Brownsburg (9-2, 3-1) to cut it to seven. The Royals hit two more 3s after that, including one by Hankins before the buzzer that put his team up 32-21 at the break.

Other than its seven turnovers, HSE did almost everything right in the first half. The Royals hit 3 of 5 from two-point range, 7 of 11 from behind the arc and made all four of their free throws.

After HSE hit its first three shots of the second half to up its lead to 17, Brownsburg scored seven straight points and trimmed its deficit to six at the end of the third quarter. While the Royals’ shooting cooled, Walton heated up and had seven points in the period.

Brownsburg’s rally came to a crashing halt in the fourth quarter, as Jenkins hit three 3s in the first three minutes to spark HSE’s final onslaught.

For the game, HSE outscored Brownsburg 33-0 from 3-point range.

“They’ve shot like that every time we’ve seen them,” Lynch said. “We beat them last year when they shot 55 percent on 3s, but when they shoot it like that, they’re very tough to beat.”

Walton led Brownsburg with 16 points, followed by Jordache Mavunga with eight and Darrian Ringo with seven.

Brownsburg hits the road Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. meeting with Crawfordsville (6-5).
