Orioles fall to Tigers

AVON — Despite 12 points and seven rebounds from Lexi Short, the Avon girls’ basketball team fell to visiting Fishers 61-27 Saturday.

“This is part of the growing process,” Avon coach David Cupp said. “There were times in the game where (Fishers) just played harder. We need to work harder to make up for a lack of experience.”

Fishers (3-2) got off to a hot start, beginning the game on a 15-4 run. Avon (0-4) scored the next four points coming out of a timeout, but still trailed 19-8 after the first quarter.

The Tigers also came out strong in the second, starting the quarter on a 14-2 run and stretched their advantage to a 36-12 lead going into halftime.

The Orioles struggled with the defensive pressure and intensity from the Tigers through much of the game.

“We don’t have a lot of confidence and not a lot of belief that we can handle the ball,” Cupp said. “Ball handling is something that we work on a lot in practice and take pride in.”

An 11-3 run by Fishers coming out of the half put the game out of reach and the Tigers cruised to victory.

“We are very pleased with the win,” Fishers coach Michael Gaines said. “Today was the best consistent effort that we have had and a great team win.”

Cupp was enthusiastic with the offensive output of Short, despite seeing a great deal of defensive attention from Fishers.

“I’m always pleased with Lexi’s effort,” Cupp said. “The growth that she’s shown in a year is phenomenal. She didn’t even start on JV a year ago to now being our best player. That’s not easy. She’s a great kid and a dream player to coach.”

Along with Short, Carly Froderman, Megan Hunt and Raenah Bailey each chipped in three points.

Avon’s Patrick Rodgers made the cut at last week’s RBC Canadian Open at Royal Montreal Golf Club, and was a solid 4-under par on holes 1-11 over the weekend. It was the remaining holes that were the problem, as he went 7-over on those to finish at even-par and tied for 62nd place.
