Brownsburg rolls as Mavunga sets record

BROWNSBURG — Not only did senior Stephanie Mavunga lead the Brownsburg girls’ basketball team to a 52-27 home victory over McCutcheon Wednesday night, she set a school record as the all-time leading career scorer.

Mavunga scored 28 points, grabbed 18 rebounds, and blocked five shots to pass Judy Cummings on Brownsburg’s all-time list in the third quarter of the game.

“(The record) is amazing,” Mavunga said. “I didn’t realize that I was close or anything. I was just researching some stuff today, so it was really weird that it came up. I just give it all to my teammates and my coaches. They’ve been doing a good job since I’ve been a freshman and have been helping me out ... My teammates push me hard in practice and I push them hard as well.”

Brownsburg (11-3) got off to a hot start, claiming a 13-2 advantage after one quarter. Building off that momentum, the Bulldogs had an equally scorching second quarter, outscoring the Mavericks (4-11) 14-7 in the period.

Brownsburg kept the intensity going after the half and cruised to the 25-point win.

After claiming the Hendricks County Tournament championship over the weekend, Wednesday had all of makings of a trap game for the Bulldogs.

“Coming off the county tournament, it’s hard sometimes to get focused for this game,” Brownsburg coach Amy Brauman said. “McCutcheon plays a lot of different defenses, so we had a lot of work during the couple of days that we had. I’m proud of the girls. I thought they didn’t start off the best, but they got some things going, got some short shots, and did a nice job.”

Brauman said she was also pleased with Mavunga’s effort and proud of her career accolades.

“I’m not sure that she even knew about the record until we announced it,” Brauman said. “That’s a lot of points in a career. She does a nice job inside and she’s been a force since she was a freshman. We rely on her and we don’t always make the best passes. We just kind of throw it up there sometimes and she goes after it and does a nice job finishing.”
