Avon girls' soccer remains unbeaten

AVON — Last year’s loss to Brownsburg in the sectional championship added greater incentive for the Avon girls’ soccer team this season.

After falling 1-0 to Brownsburg in the first half of overtime last year, Saturday’s game against the Bulldogs was the first time the two county and conference rivals had shared the same pitch. And this time, the result was different.

The host Orioles soundly defeated the Bulldogs 3-0 Saturday afternoon to move to 9-0-3 on the season.

Brownsburg looked tentative early and Avon took advantage, striking quickly.

In the sixth minute, off a corner kick taken by freshman Hope Van Wagner, junior Bailee Storms won possession with her head and her first touch was pure. That was the only goal Avon needed to win their sixth consecutive game and partially expunge the last loss the Orioles had suffered.

“That was motivation for the girls right there,” Avon coach Eric Nance said. “This is the last team that beat us. We talked about that yesterday in practice. We wanted to come out... our challenge was to get off to a good start, so I was excited that we got a couple goals in the first 10, 15 minutes.”

Van Wagner doubled Avon’s lead with 31:24 remaining in the opening half, as she used her head to bury a cross from senior captain Sarah Zolcak. Aside from a set piece, it was the first Orioles goal in which a through ball was not involved.

Avon dominated the opening half of play as Brownsburg attempted just two shots , each by junior Alexandra Neuman. Orioles’ goalkeeper Hannah Klotzsche was not tested by either of them. In contrast, Avon attempted 14 shots, eight of which were on goal. Brownsburg junior goalkeeper Kassy Christy made five saves.

Brownsburg coach Megan Osborn said she told her team at half that a 2-0 deficit is very dangerous.

Avon’s Patrick Rodgers made the cut at last week’s RBC Canadian Open at Royal Montreal Golf Club, and was a solid 4-under par on holes 1-11 over the weekend. It was the remaining holes that were the problem, as he went 7-over on those to finish at even-par and tied for 62nd place.
