Hendricks County Flyer
---- — BROWNSBURG — As the only team with all five members of its squad shooting under 100 and within eight strokes of one another, the Avon Orioles girls’ golf team rode that consistency to a sectional title.
After taking the county championship to begin the year at the same course — West Chase Golf Club — Avon coach Amy Nickol said her team fell off a little bit during the progression of the season, making this victory a bit surprising.
“I’m a little shocked,” she said. “The girls had some good holes and had some tough holes and seemed to come back from the tough holes that they had and seemed to get better as the day went on.”
Avon’s squad of Rachel Thompson (88), Leah Thompson (93), Alex Price (96), Ashley Pawlowski (92), and Danielle Pretchel (96) carded a 369 to take the title.
Brownsburg’s youth movement of four sophomores and a freshman came in second. The Bulldogs’ team of Maddie Cody (85), Emma Wilkins (92), Andrea Wesson (104), Sophia Topi (95) and Reilly Olmstead (104) finished with a 376.
“They are so young and went into this saying, ‘We can do this but we’ll live for another day because we’re sophomores and a freshman,’” Brownsburg coach Phylis Miller said. “I’m so excited and that’s great experience for them.”
Cody, a sophomore that played in the sectional last season as the only freshman on a senior dominated team, finished as the individual medalist.
“This is exciting,” Cody said. “But it’s also a little bit of pressure because we’re going in against some older teams.”
Plainfield finished fourth and barely missed the team cut for regional play, however, the Quakers advanced Nicki Glbert, Liz Cozart and Tori Treash as the top three individuals not on an advancing team.
“It’s tough and you feel bad for the girls,” Plainfield coach Jon Utterback said. “You play a round of golf and every single person can say ‘I had two strokes here or two strokes there, easily.’ I’m disappointed that the team didn’t get out, but I’m happy for those three girls.”
Gilbert (93), Treash (92), Cozart (96), Paige Miller (100) and Payton Duke (101) carded a 381, two stokes back of Mooresville (379).
Tri-West’s Maddie Ross (99), Ashley Unger (104), Maggie Burgess (110), Abby Bridwell (113) and Emilee Pfeifer (107) took fifth, recording a 420.
Danville’s Lauryn Luckey (97), Makynzie Harding (100), Madeline Motes (118), Kasey Newby (118) and Addison Crouch finished sixth with a 433. Luckey, a senior, missed advancing as an individual by one stroke.
Cascade’s Mary Tomblin (102), Sage Archer (109), Shelby Baldwin (107), Maureen Flanigan (118), and Alyssa Gowan (139) carded a 436, good enough for seventh.
Avon, Brownsburg and the three Plainfield golfers advance to regional play on Saturday at Smock Golf Course.
