Bulldogs down Hawks in sectional opener

By James Howell

AVON — The Brownsburg Bulldogs baseball team opened sectional play Wednesday night at Avon High School against the Decatur Central Hawks.

The Bulldogs advanced past the Hawks and into the next round of sectional play with an 8-4 victory. Brownsburg scored in five different innings, showing consistent flow on offense throughout the game.

“We played really well,” Brownsburg coach Eric Mattingly said. “It was a really good start to the tournament.”

The Bulldogs opened the game with a one-run first inning and the score came by way of a Decatur Central error. Brownsburg was able to get their first hit in the top of the second as junior Sam Comer reached first on a ground ball.

The Hawks escaped the first two innings giving up only one run as Brownsburg had other potential runs stranded on the bases. Decatur used its momentum on defense to draw even after two innings. The Hawks utilized hits from Taylor Douglas and Jacob Byrd to knot the score.

The Bulldogs came right back in the top of the third inning with a triple from senior Michael Hartnagel followed by a Tyler Houston single that brought Hartnagel home.

In the fourth, Comer led off with a single, then reached second on an error and eventually stole third.

After securing two outs, Decatur’s pitcher walked senior Garrett Isch and hit Hartnagel. Houston then added a two-RBI single, bringing in Isch and Hartnagel for a 4-1 lead. Following the Houston single, senior Haden Shipman hit a bouncer into left-centerfield. That hit scored two more runs, ending the top of the fourth with the Bulldogs up 6-1 on the Hawks.

Brownsburg held their advantage through the fifth inning and added one run each in the sixth and seventh innings with yet another RBI from Houston. Houston finished with four RBI and went 3 for 4 from the plate.

“I was just trying to help the team out and drive some runs in,” Houston said. “I did my job to go out and help us win.”

Houston also pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs, striking out eight batters while giving up seven hits.

Decatur scored three runs in the seventh inning but Brownsburg held on for the victory.

Hartnagel also had a nice day on offense tallying two triples and ended the day with three runs.

“I’ve been rolling over these past few games and I just thought gap-to-gap today and it helped out,” Hartnagel said.

The Bulldogs continue sectional play this Monday at 10 a.m. against Southport at Avon High School.
