---- — Avon made the lengthy drive to McCutcheon Friday night, and came back with a 31-13 win, the Orioles’ fourth straight after a 1-3 start to the season.
For the second week in a row, Avon scored on defense and special teams.
“I felt really good about our defensive play,” Avon coach Mark Bless said. “We were able to stop the run, guys did a nice job up front, and when they wanted to pass, we put a lot of pressure on.”
After McCutcheon got on the board first with a first-quarter field goal, Avon (5-3) answered with a 4-yard touchdown run by Derrick Tennant.
Raushawn Brent made a big defensive play for the Orioles in the first quarter, when he recovered a fumble in the end zone for a score.
In the second quarter, Avon’s Nyles Edwards had a 21-yard field goal for a 17-3 halftime lead.
The Orioles’ defense shined again in the third quarter, when David Griffith had a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown, his second pick-six in as many weeks.
After 10 unanswered points by McCutcheon (3-5), Tennant had a 24-yard TD run to close out the scoring.
Tennant finished with 81 yards on 14 carries, while David Schall had 15 carries for 60 yards.
“We ran the ball well, even though we had some big plays called back on penalties,” Bless said. “Derrick did a good job running north and south for us, and David added some tough yards as well.”
Quarterback Brandon Peters went 10 of 16 for 112 yards and one interception.
Avon wraps up the regular season by hosting Zionsville (4-4), which beat the Orioles 31-23 last season.
“We know they’ll be well-prepared, and we have to clean up some of the penalties we had tonight and make sure we take care of the ball,” Bless said. “There’s a lot of respect between our two programs.”
