Bulldogs blank Bronchos

Brownsburg traveled north to Lafayette Jeff last night in search of its first victory in four games. After winning the season opener against McCutcheon, the Bulldogs lost four straight to Noblesville, HSE, Westfield and Avon.

Brownsburg coach Brett Comer was looking for a spark to get his team going and they came through with a 28-0 win over the Bronchos.

The Bulldogs’ defense pitched a shutout and intercepted Lafayette Jeff quarterback Matt Johnson four times.

“It’s obviously great to get a shutout and get a road win against a team with offensive weapons like the Bronchos have,” Comer said. “They are 1-4, but have given people fits. We were worried to say the least. I was very, very pleased.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Brownsburg took an early 7-0 on freshman quarterback Hunter Johnson’s 4-yard touchdown run with 10:14 left in the half.

“We scored our first touchdown and our sideline was like ‘Really? Is that what happened?,’” Comer said. “It was almost anti-climatic and we finally punched it in. It’s been a while when we score first and take a lead.”

Sophomore Toks Akinribade followed that up with a 2-yard TD run and Brownsburg led 14-0 at the half.

Brownsburg kicked to Jeff to open the third and despite having the ball for long stretches, the Bronchos were stymied by the Bulldogs defense. Brad Guilinger and Victor Inglima each had a pick while Caleb Cooley recorded a pair of interceptions on the night.

Akinribade scored his second TD of the night n a 60-yard run and Brownburg’s Devonte Allen bested that with a 77-yard scamper. Brownsburg rushed for 298 yards on the night as Akinribade eclipsed 120 yards and Allen finished with 98.

“It’s funny because we were frustrated and thought we could’ve scored more,” Comer said. “We weren’t firing on all cylinders and it’s great to win ugly. It beats the alternative. We still have things to work on and that’s something we can focus on.

“It was a shot in the arm if you will and it came at the right time because we needed it. Hopefully, we’ll get another one next week and keep rolling.”

Brownsburg (2-4) hosts winless Harrison (0-6) on Friday.
