Danville falls in wet battle

DANVILLE — Despite 329 yards rushing for the tandem of Ben Jones and Autry Pickens, Danville fell to visiting Western Boone, 27-24, Friday night.

The effort was tremendous, Danville coach Russ Sumner said.

“We really worked hard all week on making sure that we were playing assignment football,” he said. “Against a team that is really disciplined and executes really well, especially one that runs the option, you have to be really assignment oriented. We didn’t do a good job of that at times on the defensive side of the ball, and offensively, we made some glaring errors on blocking assignments and things like that”

Danville (1-4) broke through into scoring position first, as a 38-yard run by Jones and a facemask penalty gave the Warriors the ball at the 32-yard line. However, the drive ended when they turned the ball over on downs.

Western Boone’s next drive also featured a long run by their quarterback, Logan Wethington, whose 52-yard scamper gave the Stars (4-1) possession at the 18-yard line. Unlike the Warriors, Western Boone took advantage and Riggs Baxter scored on a 3-yard touchdown plunge.

The Warriors took advantage of their next opportunity, as a fumble gave Danville the ball deep in Star territory, and three plays later, Pickens scored from four yards out. The Warriors also capitalized on the two-point conversion, a run by Pickens.

On the next Danville possession, Jones scored on an 18-yard run. Pickens converted the two-point conversion again and the Warriors took a 16-7 advantage.

Just before the end of the half, Western Boone cut the lead to 16-14, as Wethington scored on a 9-yard run.

Danville started the second half scoring with special teams, as Dylan Boyd blocked a punt that was recovered by Nick Hall in the end zone. Pickens, once again, converted the two-point conversion and the Warriors claimed a 24-14 advantage with 6:51 remaining in the third quarter.

Avon’s Patrick Rodgers made the cut at last week’s RBC Canadian Open at Royal Montreal Golf Club, and was a solid 4-under par on holes 1-11 over the weekend. It was the remaining holes that were the problem, as he went 7-over on those to finish at even-par and tied for 62nd place.
