Middle school sports report

Avon South

The seventh-grade football team stayed undefeated as it defeated conference foe Zionsville West, 12-0. The defense recorded another shutout, led by Zach Rineheart, who had two sacks and two forced fumbles. Jordan Sellmeyer and Addison Batton each had a fumble recovery. Conner Barnes, Jacob Haden, Tyler Miner, Trey Howe and Cedric McBride also led the defense. Jordan Peterson scored two touchdowns, one on an interception and the other on a 45-yard run set up by a block from Sampson James. Skylar Stone connected with Alex Griffith on a key fourth-quarter pass to help secure the victory.

The eighth-grade football team suffered its first loss of the season in a 14-6 defeat to Zionsville West. Connor Albert scored the lone touchdown for the Orioles on a 29-yard completion from Luke Shayotovich.

The boys’ tennis team earned a shutout victory against Avon North. Winning matches for the Orioles were Drew Langford, Evan Zolcak, Braedon Payne, Kyle LIngle, Sam Jones, Luke Edwards, Evan Reeder, Parker Niewald, Jake Francis, Jake Barratt, Derek Selge, Austin Baugh, Rut Patel, Mykyata Finchincko, Hayden Czerwonky, Logan Wheeler, Chris Ley and Ray Gosselin.

The girls’ golf team won a close 6-hole meet against Brownsburg East, 150-155. Leading scorers for Avon were Sydney Steiner (32), Hannah Gildner (37), Sara Nanninga (40) and Portia Baratta (41).

The seventh-grade volleyball team beat Paul Hadley, 25-13, 25-10, with strong performances from Chloe Rickenbach and Ava Torrance.

The eighth-grade volleyball team topped Paul Hadley, 25-23, 25-22. Leading the Orioles were Abby Burns with a good serving run, while Jayden Kruse and Katie Thompson were strong in the middle. Ally Stamper and Hannah Williams contributed with multiple digs and assists

The team also beat Perry Meridian, 25-9, 25-21. Kruse led the team with 13 kills and Stamper had seven digs.

The girls’ cross country teams traveled to Brownsburg to compete against Brownsburg East, Brownsburg West and Avon North, and came away with a second-place team finish. The top seven runners for the Orioles were Thyra Edgerton, Aileen Moreno, Annie Dela Cruz, Kaitlyn Biggs, Elizabeth Myers, Erin McLain and Lauren Myers. Myers finished as the top Avon runner and had the sixth-fastest race time in South history for females in her first race.
