Bulldogs take OT thriller

AVON — Big games, like the one between Class 4A No. 5 Brownsburg and No. 15 Mooresville in Friday’s sectional semifinal, require players to step up and make big plays.

There were no shortage of pivotal moments on both sides, but two seniors came trough in the clutch for the Bulldogs as Brownsburg secured a place in the sectional finals with a 50-47 win.

“I am just really proud of all the kids and the way they played in the moment, the environment and the intensity of the game,” Brownsburg coach Steve Lynch said.

With just over 12 seconds left in regulation, Brownsburg senior Trevor Lucas hit a long jumper to tie the game at 44 and send it to overtime.

Classmate Tyler Houston secured the win in OT with two free throws to put Brownsburg up three with 21.8 seconds left and cap the game’s scoring. Houston hit a floater in the lane prior to that and led Brownsburg with his only points of the game coming in the extra session.

“It’s my senior year, I just don’t want it to end,” Houston said. “It was just crazy (in the locker room afterward).”

Those two defining moments would not have been possible without the play of K.J. Walton. The junior poured in 28 points, including 10 in the second quarter as the Bulldogs fought back into the game.

Brownsburg started the first quarter a bit slow, hitting 2 of 10 from the floor, but only trailed 10-7 headed to the second.

Walton scored the first eight points of the second quarter and asserted his will on the game.

“He was relentless even when things weren’t really going well for him, he just kept attacking and had a great mentality,” Lynch said. “He was picking his spots very well. He showed great poise in a game like that.”
