Bruins beat Eagles in shootout

LIZTON — In a game that was not offensively challenged on either side, the Tri-West girls’ basketball team defeated visiting Zionsville 69-58.

“It was a great win,” Tri-West coach Brad Acton said. “We talked before the game that we know that Zionsville is a physical, aggressive team ... We knew that it was going to be a hard fought, physical game and that we were going to have to match that. I was really pleased with our rebounding and our toughness on both ends.”

The Bruins (8-2) got off to a quick start, beginning the game on a 9-4 run. That propelled them to a 19-10 advantage after the first quarter and a 30-24 lead over the Eagles (2-7).

Zionsville coach Andy Maguire said, “I was pleased with our effort. I told that girls that I thought that the difference was really the first quarter. We just came out and were down 6-0 and got down 19-10 and if you look at the final score, that’s kind of what it ended up being. It says that we need to focus a little bit better and be ready to play. After that, I was very pleased. I thought our effort was outstanding.”

Zionsville was able to pull within four points on several occasions in the fourth quarter, but the Bruins were just too much.

Having a somewhat inexperienced team, Acton was pleased to have a tight battle in the second half.

“It was good to battle some adversity and have a close game,” he said. “We got a lead in the first quarter, but the second half was a tight game. I thought our kids kept their composure and made plays when we needed them down the stretch. Games like that make you better as the season goes on.”

Lauren DeSutter led the way for Tri-West with 24 points, while Karen Jones scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Marisa Meyer chipped in 10.
