Brownsburg clamps down Westfield

BROWNSBURG — Coming in on a 10-game losing streak did not bode well for the visiting Westfield Shamrocks boys’ basketball team Friday night as they visited Class 4A No. 5 Brownsburg.

Brownsburg showed little mercy for Westfield’s situation, holding the Shamrocks to their second-lowest point total of the season and handed them a 59-32 loss.

“I thought it was really, really solid team defense,” Brownsburg coach Steve Lynch said. “We were nit-picking at them but they did a really good job sustaining their defense. The kids are doing a nice job being very efficient.”

Westfield started four freshmen and a senior — five Shamrocks were out due to injury — and Brownsburg’s defense went to work, holding the young squad to two first quarter field goals.

“The game moves at a different speed when you’re a freshman,” Westfield coach Eric Rauch said.

Brownsburg’s K.J Walton propelled the Bulldogs to a hot start, scoring nine of the team’s 11 first-quarter points.

Trailing 11-5 heading to the second, Brownsburg opened up with a 6-0 run — all off Westfield turnovers — as Darrian Ringo scored on a layup and Trevor Lucas converted a layup and a dunk.

“Darrian was very active up top, stealing a lot of passes and deflecting balls to our advantage,” Lynch said.

Brownsburg’s stingy defense held Westfield to under double digits until less than five seconds remained in the first half. Westfield went into the break down 24-10.

The third quarter started with an alley-oop that Walton finished with authority and got worse for the Shamrocks from there. While Westfield scored 12 in the quarter, Brownsburg upped its lead to 24 by the start of the fourth.

“We couldn’t’ defend them in the third quarter,” Rauch said. “We couldn’t get the bleeding stopped. Timeouts didn’t clog it, nothing.”
