Orioles get first win with shutout

WEST LAFAYETTE — It took three weeks into the season for the Avon football team to notch its first win. However, victories like Friday’s against West Lafayette Harrison are the type teams can use as a catapult for the rest of the season.

The Orioles throttled the Raiders 34-0 and played a complete game across all three facets.

“I thought our players played really well tonight,” Avon coach Mark Bless said. “We were able to move the ball and get it in the end zone a bit more than we had been. Defensively, we were led by our front seven as that group put pressure on the quarterback. Our special teams improved a lot as well.”

Avon’s offense was led by David Schall’s effort on the ground, as the 6-foot-2, 195-pounder bruised the Raiders’ defense for 232 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns.

“David had a big night for us and ran with force and strength,” Bless said. “It was nice to be able to capitalize on our drives tonight.

“We controlled the line of scrimmage tonight.”

Avon’s line of Angelo Allen, Ross Carter, Jake Higginbotham, Zach Ryan and Ryan Willis opened the running lanes as the Orioles rushed for 268 yards. The offense tallied 369 total yards on the night.

Schall opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 9-yard TD run.

Quarterback Brandon Peters completed 6 of 12 passes for 101 yards and a TD. Peters also rushed for Avon’s second score from two yards out.

Peters hit Cress Kimbrough for a 38-yard score in the second quarter to put the Orioles up 21-0.

Avon’s defense might have played better than its offense in limiting Harrison’s offense to 90 yards.

T.J. Wilson tacked on the defense’s biggest play in the third quarter, when he picked up a fumble and returned it 48 yards for a score to give Avon a 28-point advantage.

Schall ended the scoring with a 2-yard TD run.

Avon (1-3) hosts Fishers (1-1) next week. The Tigers take on Westfield Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Avon’s Patrick Rodgers made the cut at last week’s RBC Canadian Open at Royal Montreal Golf Club, and was a solid 4-under par on holes 1-11 over the weekend. It was the remaining holes that were the problem, as he went 7-over on those to finish at even-par and tied for 62nd place.
