---- — LIZTON — The North Montgomery girls’ basketball team visited Tri-West Thursday night and went home disappointed. Tri-West’s offense proved effective from the start, and the visiting Chargers were never able to overcome an early deficit as the Bruins came away with a 64-42 win.
Leading the offensive charge for the home team was senior Marisa Meyer with 17 points. Tri-West juniors Madison Sprecher and Karen Jones tallied 13 and 12 points, respectively. Jones recorded a game-high nine rebounds.
Tri-West coach Brad Acton said his team’s offensive success shows depth and unity.
“You’re always looking for a balanced attack,” he said. “On any given night, we’ve got five or six girls that are capable of scoring in double figures, and you hope if someone is having a bad night, you’ve got two or three other girls that are going to step up.
“I was really proud of how we shared the ball. We made the extra pass, we were looking to hit the open person. As a coach, you want kids to play together.”
Tri-West (5-3) jumped out to an early lead, as Meyer scored nine points in the opening quarter and the Bruins opened up an early double-digit margin.
Tri-West’s pressure proved problematic for the Chargers. North Montgomery (1-7) also ended up in foul trouble, allowing the Bruins to get to the line early and often as Tri-West was in the bonus with over six minutes to go in the first half.
Tri-West continued to find the net consistently in the second quarter, and took a commanding 44-24 lead into the half. Meyer scored 13 in the first half for the Bruins. North Montgomery’s Hannah O’Brien scored eight to lead the Chargers in the break.
The third quarter proved similar to the first half. North Montgomery was never able to put together an extended run, and Tri-West widened its lead to 22 going into the final period. From that point, Tri-West emptied its bench and coasted down the stretch.
Tri-West will turn its attention to next week, as they host Frankfort Tuesday night.
