DCHS wrestlers fall to Eagles

DANVILLE — Hosting its last home match of the season in the first third of December, the Danville wrestling team celebrated Senior Night on Wednesday.

Unfortunately for Danville, Zionsville rode roughshod over the Warriors with a 55-13 victory.

Danville (8-4) was without four varsity wrestlers for various reasons (injuries, sickness), and that impacted the final score, but may not have been enough to avoid the outcome. The Warriors forfeited five of 14 weight classes, giving up 24 points as each squad double forfeited the 126-pound class.

“It’s one of those things where everything that can happen, did,” Danville coach Steve Pugliese said. “We have one out with a hip-flexor, two with concussions, a broken nose and some sickness. We don’t have enough depth to overcome that right now and that’s that.”

Danville was without varsity grapplers Isaiah Scherrer, Nick Dailey, Deondre Boller, James Banich and Autry Pickens.

The Warriors won three matches on the night. Brock Hudkins (120) took a forfeit, Elliott Molloy (130) won by decision and Kody Caudle (16) took a major decision.

Molloy bumped up a weight class, taking on Zionsville’s Sam Kern, and won 12-8.

Caudle drew high praise from his coach for his efforts on the mat after winning 9-0 over Zionsville’s Nick Kuller.

“Caudle’s wrestling well at 11-1 on the season,” Pugliese said. “He works as hard, if not harder, than anybody in the room and he’s as coachable, if not more coachable than anybody in the room. He’s getting what he’s worked for.”

Pugliese said his team needed to work harder in practice to accomplish the goals set at the beginning of the season.

“This team wants to enjoy all of the fruits of success that last year’s team had, but they haven’t worked like last year’s team did,” Pugliese said. “That’s on the coaches, on me, to get that corrected. That’s job one.”
