Bulldogs claim four spots on Flyer all-county team

The Brownsburg football team compiled nine wins (9-4) for the first time in a decade and captured its first sectional title in 24 years.

The Bulldogs’ memorable season was fueled by a revamped offense that scored 25.7 points per game throughout the season.

Leading the way was running back Darryl Jordan, who ran for 1,275 yards and 11 touchdowns and averaged 6.1 yards per carry.

Quarterback Robby Robbins threw for 1,118 yards and 10 touchdowns, while running for another 639 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Robbins’ favorite target was wide receiver Charles Torwudzo, who had 30 catches for 470 yards and six touchdowns.

Defensively, the Bulldogs allowed just 15.8 points per game.

Torrey Nibbs led the Brownsburg secondary with 56 solo tackles, 20 assisted tackles, and seven interceptions. Nibbs also had a fumble recovery, a forced fumble, a blocked kick, a blocked punt, and a safety.

Plainfield advanced all the way to the sectional championship game, where they ran into Indianapolis Cathedral. The Quakers finished the season with an 8-4 record.

James Hurst was the anchor of the Quakers’ offensive and defensive line.

On offense, Hurst had a 98 percent blocking percentage. On defense he finished with 38 total tackles (six for loss), a sack, and a forced fumble on defense.

Tony Hawk helped Hurst control both lines of scrimmage. He led the defensive line with 47 total tackles (five for loss), six sacks, and a forced fumble.

Johnny Jay directed the Quaker offense, throwing for 728 yards and six touchdowns while completing 57 percent of his passes. Jay also ran for four touchdowns.

Elliott Hughes led Plainfield on the ground, rushing for 852 yards and 15 touchdowns. Hughes also played linebacker and had a team-high 109 total tackles and four sacks.

Avon had an up and down regular season but came up big in sectional play, defeating Ben Davis and Pike before falling to Brownsburg in the championship game.

Taje High did it all for the Orioles. On offense he ran for 574 yards and seven touchdowns; on defense he had a team-high 101 total tackles; and he also returned two punts for touchdowns.

Wide receiver Kendall Griffin led the Orioles with 46 receptions for 644 yards, and four touchdowns.

Dominique Blackmon had 295 receiving yards and three touchdowns; 139 rushing yards and two touchdowns; and also had an interception for the Orioles.

Tri-West won four of its final five games before falling in the sectional semifinal.

Brock Sellers did it all for the Bruins. He racked up 99 total tackles from the safety position and offensively, hauled in 24 catches for 591 yards and nine touchdowns, and ran for another 191 yards.

Tri-West quarterback John Frederick threw for 1,321 yards and 13 touchdowns. He ran for another 354 yards and three touchdowns.

Danville safety Trent Schaffer was voted team MVP, and led the Warriors with 61 total tackles. Schaffer was also named first team all-conference.

Cascade’s Cody Blackburn was named the team’s offensive MVP and compiled a 92 percent blocking percentage as an offensive lineman.
