Bulldogs fall on senior night
By Ryan Palencer
BROWNSBURG — In a battle for late-season positioning in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference, the Brownsburg football team was defeated by visiting Zionsville 11-7 on Friday night. Each team entered the game with identical 4-3 records, tied for third place in the HCC.

Brownsburg coach Brett Comer was disappointed that the Bulldogs were unable to get a win in the final home game for his seniors.
“We had seniors step up tonight on senior night,” Comer said. “I’m sorry that they didn’t get a win, but they played well.”
With 3:32 remaining in the first quarter, Brownsburg (4-4) opened the scoring with a 31-yard touchdown scamper by sophomore Zach Dutra. Dutra carried the ball three times for 43 yards and the score.
However, with 10:00 remaining in the half, Zionsville (5-3) stole the momentum. Bulldog quarterback Brad Hollen was sacked in the end zone for a safety — cutting the lead to 7-2.
Two plays after the ensuing kickoff, Eagle tailback Carson Cramer rambled 54 yards for a touchdown giving Zionsville the lead for good, 9-7.
“They broke a long run on a stunt that we brought and that’s the way it is,” Comer said. “Sometimes you lose a game like that, sometimes you win one.”
Cramer led the way for Zionsville, rushing for 108 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown.
The Eagles tallied another safety and claimed the five-point victory.
The Bulldogs were only able to accumulate 105 total yards for the game. Comer was impressed with the Zionsville defense and gives them credit.
“Zionsville’s a very solid football team,” he said. “Give them credit. They played defense and they played hard. We only put seven points on the board, so you have to give them credit.”
Gus Ervin led the way for the Bulldogs with 15 carries for 53 yards.
In defeat, the Brownsburg defense also performed well, allowing just 179 total yards.
“Our defense played well,” Comer said. “We gave up 11 points, but we really didn’t. We gave up seven defensively. You knew that it was going to be a tight game. They had one like that last week with Fishers. I expect the same thing next week with us and Fishers.”
The Bulldogs will hope to rebound by traveling to Fishers next week before the beginning of sectional play.
“At 4-4 now, we want to get it and finish with a winning record,” Comer said. “We’re at their place, which is tough. It’s a long bus ride. The good things is, I think we got through this one unscathed. You put your boots back on and get back to work. That’s our mentality and that’s what we’re going to do. The kids have a great attitude.”
