Warriors place high at conference meet
By Ryan Palencer
DANVILLE —Despite fighting through tough conditions, the Danville girls’ track team finished second (130 points), being just edged out by Southmont (131 points) at the Sagamore Conference competition at Danville on Friday night. The Warrior boys’ team finished third (106 points).
“It was a great meet,” Danville coach Bill Bradshaw said. “You can’t get it any closer than that.”
The Warriors fared well in the field events. On the girl’s side, Whitney Adams won the high jump and Melanie Poynter finished third and fourth in the shot put and discus respectively, while Nicole Cullison finished second in the pole vault. On the boy’s side, Karl Schoening won the shot put and discus, while Trent Shaffer won the pole vault. Nate Rigdon finished third in the long jump and Brandon Graham finished third in the high jump. Kyle Mackey placed third in the pole vault.
Bradshaw was pleased with Schoening’s effort through the rainy weather.
“Karl does a great job for us,” he said. “He’s our county champion. He was a little off tonight because it was a little slick out there. He did a nice job.”
After finishing fourth in the preliminary race, Justin Gillespie responded by winning the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.53. Luke Robinson won the 400 and finished second in the 200. The team of Mackey, Rigdon, Robinson, and Michael Cooprider finished third in the 4x400 relay. On the girls’ side, Abigail Brewer won the 100 hurdles and finished third in the 300 hurdles. Samantha Harlan finished second in the 300 hurdles and third in the 100 hurdles. Lauren Callahan finished second in the 800 and Jessica Coccaro finished second in the 200. Briana Deckard won both the 1600 and the 3200. The team of Brewer, Coccaro, Taylor Reyes, and Molly Stewart won the 4x100 relay, while Callahan, Coccaro, Rachael Burton and Hannah Rawlinson finished third in the 4x400 relay.
Tri-West also had a good showing at the conference meet. The boys’ team finished fourth (70 points), while the girl’s squad finished sixth (41 points).
Tri-West coach Luke Baker was pleased with the effort of his team and their battle with the weather conditions.
“(We can take away) persisting and pushing through bad weather conditions,” he said. “That’s something that’s good for the athletes to learn, that in bad conditions, we can still run well, we can still push, we can still do our best. We had a lot of positive performances, a lot of our kids did very well.”
Kara Brothers won the 100 in a time of 13.12 and finished fourth in the 200. Baker was pleased with Brothers’ effort in the individual races, as well as the relays.
“(Brothers) was awesome,” he said. “Winning the 100 was a shock to us. She did an awesome job.”
On the boys’ side, the team of Clayton Edwards, Alex Skudrovskis, Jake Wright, and Andrew Gregory finished third in the 4x800 relay. Taylor Goode finished second in the 100. The team of Jay Walls Jr., Sam Pfiefer, Matt Moore, and Goode finished second in the 4x100 relay. Moore also finished second in the 300 hurdles. In the 3200, Daniel Hoover and Chris Cabage finished third and fourth respectively. In the final race of the day, the team of Walls, Gregory, Pfiefer, and Moore finished second in the 4x400 relay.
