PLAINFIELD — Members of the staff at Sugar Grove Senior Living in Plainfield pride themselves on creating a enriched living environment for seniors.
Julie Zmijewski is the leasing director for Sugar Grove. She said everyone on staff pitches in to do whatever is needed.
“When I’m not out on appointments I pitch in just about anywhere,” she said. “I drive the bus and in fact I was just helping out in the dining room.”
Sugar Grove is a licensed residential community and has a 24-hour a day nursing staff.
“We have a strong team,” she said. “They are warm hearted people who get to know the residents and their families personally.”
Sugar Grove has an extensive list of amenities including walking paths, schedule transportation, fitness center, and ice cream parlor.
Sugar Grove offers “Select Your Care” approach which allows residents to live life on their own terms. The community offers three types of community living — active retirement, assisted living, and memory care.
“Seniors don’t have to give up their freedoms to live here,” she said. “We try to enhance their lives.”
The facility offers maintenance-free, active retirement in either a spacious garden home or private apartment. Garden homes feature a fully equipped kitchen, relaxing sunroom, and landscaped yards. They are adjacent to the main building and restaurant. Washer and dryer hookups are provided and garages are available. All utilities are included.
Private apartments in the main building provide a home-like setting for those who may need assistance with personal care and daily living activities. Being under the same roof allows residents to be within steps of many amenities, including the theater, fine dining, and recreation.
Sugar Grove also features a home-like setting for seniors who may prefer the assisted living setting. They may include assistance with daily activities, such as medication management, bathing and/or dressing. For added piece of mind, there is an emergency response system provided.
The individualized personal service plan also includes daily programs, events and outings, housekeeping, laundry service, and meal service.
The facility can also serve seniors who are experiencing various forms of memory loss. Individuals are assessed to identify their cognitive and physical abilities. The staff gets to know the resident to help create a comprehensive service plan to support and maximize his or her quality of life.
There is also a state-of-the-art security system which allows residents to live independently while remaining within the comfort of a secured environment.
“Our restaurant is open all day long,” Zmijewski said. “They can come in at their leisure and can order whatever they want.”
The restaurant is called The Grove. It opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 7 p.m. The schedule allows the Garden Home and Assisted Living residents the opportunity to eat on their own schedule.
Food is freshly made to order, and residents are able to enjoy a variety of choices daily.
“We just celebrated our first year of operation on Oct. 1,” she said. “We’ve been doing really well. We’ve had a steady flow of new residents every month.”
Each month, the staff plan several activities for residents. This month the facility’s chef will host a pumpkin carving and fellowship time. Residents have also had the opportunity to learn about identity theft from representatives from M&I Bank. All this after, the staff and residents held a successful fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association in late September. The event raised $2,000 for the cause.
A few residents also recently appeared on the Sugar Grove float in the Quaker Day Parade in Plainfield.
Sugar Grove is operated by a local board of directors that meet regularly to help make decision for the community.
“This is a very friendly place to be,” Zmijewski said. “It really is a fantastic place to live. You can really get to know some very nice people.”
