Siblings stay fit into their 90s

PLAINFIELD —

Siblings stay fit into their 90s

n Recreation center enjoys long-time members

The early morning visitors at the Plainfield Recreation and Aquatic Center are very familiar with Fern Bauer and Bill Lange, siblings who work out together almost every day. The long-time Plainfield residents are keeping fitness a top priority well into their 90s.

Bauer, 92, and Lange, 94, have been members of the rec center since it opened in the fall of 2004. Bauer will be 93 in April.

“We actually signed up before they built it,” said Lange.

“Before that we walked at Hummel Park,” said Bauer. “We work out every day except Wednesday. I bowl in a league on Wednesdays.”

She said staying active is the best way to keep a sharp mind.

“You’ve got to keep going,” she said. “You just can’t stay home and do nothing. You also have to eat well.”

Bauer’s exercise routine includes walking on the indoor track and on a treadmill. Lange also enjoys warming up on the indoor track but then he moves on to work out on most of the machines available to facility members.

“I really like the indoor track,” he said. “It’s nice that you don’t have to worry about the weather and it’s much safer to walk in here.”

They have come up with their own exercise routines but know they can always get advice from the staff at the rec center.

“They are an inspiration to all of us,” said Mark Cox, a rec center employee. “We talk about them a lot more than they know. But it’s all good of course.”

Cox works in the early morning when Bauer and Lange visit.

“If they were not here we would worry,” said Cox.

“They would probably call or come over if we didn’t show up,” said Bauer.
