HCSS revamps annual walk/run

AVON —

Leaders with Hendricks County Senior Services are changing things up this year with their annual 5K walk/run event. The event has a new name, new location, and some new features.

The organization will host the Red, White, and Blue 5K Walk/Run from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 25 at the Avon Town Hall Park.

Sharon Severy has been organizing the event for HCSS for several years.

“We wanted to attract more people and have it during Memorial Day weekend so we can honor local veterans,” Severy said. “We’ll have food, face painting, and the Exchange Club will be handing out flags to everyone who attends.”

The event is a fund raiser for the agency.

Registration is $20 with a T-shirt or $15 without a T-shirt. In order to guarantee a shirt, registrants must return the form and fee to the senior center no later than May 12.

Registration on the day of the event is $25 per person and will be from 7 to 8:30 a.m.

Registration forms are available online at www.hendricksseniors.org. Scroll down on the right side of the page to download a form.

HCSS is inviting area veterans to come out and enjoy the event — and they don’t even have to run.

“We just want them to come and be honored for their service,” Severy said. “There will also be some businesses there doing some health screenings and the Danville American Legion color guard will be there to present ‘Taps.’”

The color guard will present colors at about 8:30 a.m. and the walk/run is set to begin at 9 a.m.

Various activities will continue until about 1 p.m.

Severy said the event in past years has brought runners and walkers from throughout Central Indiana.

“Runners and walkers include young people, adults and seniors, and grandma and grandpa,” she said. “Sometimes a father and son will run while the mom and grandma walk with the stroller.”

The Mabel on the Move food truck will be onsite offering food and refreshments.

In the past, the walk/run event has been at the Plainfield Recreation Center. Since there is not as much parking available at the Avon Town Hall Park, there will be shuttle service from Avon United Methodist Church.
