Roche, IBC announce scholarship recipients

Roche Diagnostics and the Indiana Blood Center (IBC) recently recognized 81 high school seniors from across the state who have shown they have community service in their blood, including two from Hendricks County schools.

Ashley Sluss of Danville High School and Maria Whicker of Plainfield High School were among those honored.

Both students were nominated by their administrators for showing a commitment to the IBC’s cause by participating in two blood drives throughout the 2012-2013 academic school year. Their efforts helped supply lifesaving blood to Indiana hospitals and earned them a $618 scholarship and red cords to be warn during graduation ceremonies.

Scholarship recipients are all seniors who participated in two blood drives during the academic school year either as a donor or student coordinator. Each student plans to study science, math, technology, or a health-related field at an Indiana college or vocational school.

In this academic year, Indiana Blood Center’s high school blood drives resulted in 24,628 units collected from high school students across the state. By donating blood, students learn the value of volunteering, community involvement and altruism.

Funding for the scholarship program is paid, in part, by Roche Diagnostics. Student recipients are recognized and identified by the county where their high school is located on the subsequent page.
