BROWNSBURG — The school board here approved a measure at its Monday night meeting allowing parents another option for kindergarten classes.
The Brownsburg Community School Corporation (BCSC) will offer full-day kindergarten for the 2011-12 school year.
“We recommend without reservation that parents put their kids in the full-day program,” BCSC Superintendent Dr. Jim Snapp said.
This will be the first year the corporation has offered a full-day program. The program will be available in each building where kindergarten is currently offered.
The board also approved a full-day kindergarten fee of $975, a significant reduction in the current $2,100 fee. Snapp said the fee breaks down to a little over $5 per day, and the lowest fee the district was able to offer, as the state does not offer full funding for an all day program.
“We would like to require all students to go a full day but the state does not reimburse us fully,” he said.
He expressed his hope that the low fee will offer an incentive for parents to enroll their children in the full-day program.
Snapp also said the fee is the lowest that could be offered upon the heels of the $3 million in budget reductions the district has made for the next school year.
Board members also discussed at Monday’s meeting the pending reductions of more teaching staff in the wake of the budget shortfall. The district has offered a retirement incentive, approved at last month’s school board meeting, for teachers eligible at the end of the current school year. The incentive pays teachers a lump sum of $17,500 at the end of the school year for offering their irrevocable notice of resignation and retirement. The notice was due to be received by March 11 and 17 teachers took advantage of the plan.
Kindergarten registration for BCSC will be April 7 at Cardinal Elementary, 3590 Hornaday Road. The cost of registration is $75 and children need not attend. Once the registration fee is paid, parents will have the option to pay program fees in $100 monthly increments, due on the 15th of each month. Credit card payments will be accepted.
Kindergarten readiness testing will also be held at Cardinal at a later date. Parents will be notified of their child’s placement by June 7.
