After weeks of public voting for the Top Teen Talent Scholarship, finalists have been chosen to pack up their knives and travel to North Carolina to compete for a full-tuition scholarship to The Chef’s Academy, the culinary division of Harrison College.
Plainfield resident Hannah Freeland is among the top five pastry finalists.
Finalists will contend in a Top Chef-style cook-off competition held at The Chef’s Academy’s Morrisville Campus in Morrisville, N.C., on June 15. There they will prepare a menu issued in advance by The Chef’s Academy. A judging panel of local professionals and culinary instructors will determine the winners. The first-place winner will receive a full tuition scholarship to study at The Chef's Academy at either the Indiana or North Carolina campuses. The second-place finalist will receive a $5,000 scholarship toward his or her tuition and the remaining seven finalists will each receive $1,000 scholarships.
Other pastry finalists are Taylor Thompson of Gary, N.C.; Haley Schronce of Claremont, N.C.; Destiny Kiest of Crown Point; and Anthony Burkhalter of Noblesville.
The culinary finalists are Brianna Meeks of Siler City, N.C.; Alexandria Kurtz of Lafayette; Jacob Morris of Fishers; and Adam Kingrea of Sexapahaw, N.C.
The Top Teen Talent Scholarship Competition is an event for high school juniors and seniors who wish to study the culinary arts. Students entered to compete in either the culinary arts or pastry arts and submitted an essay and recipe, as well as photos of their culinary or pastry creation. Submissions were posted on The Chef’s Academy Facebook page for the public’s vote. Students with the top nine most popular submissions advanced to the finals of the competition in North Carolina.
