Interact students reach out with Soles for Souls program

Hendricks County Flyer

— The Avon High School Interact Club recently conducted its fourth annual Soles for Souls (S4S) shoe collection and significantly exceeded past results by more than 300 pairs.

S4S is a Nashville-based notn-profit organization that distributes gently used shoes to people in need in the U.S. and around the world. Their motto is “Changing the world — one pair at a time.”

The organization has sent shoes to victims of Katrina, the tornado in Henryville, and to 130 other countries. For more information about S4S, visit the website at www.s4s.org.

In the four years of doing this project, AHS Interactors have shipped about 2,255 pairs of shoes to S4S.

This year, AHS Interact members were led by Student Director of International Projects Stephanie Williams who launched the project and encouraged the collection of 955 pairs of shoes. Interactors appealed to all students to donate and specifically targeted other school clubs, athletic teams, churches, and neighborhoods to which they have personal connections.

Additionally, they had shoe donation support from their sponsor organization Avon Rotary, Avon Walmart, Avon Curves, Cass & Company Salon, and Dugan Chevrolet.

To assist the Interact Club with the growing shipping costs, Avon High School Student Government provided a $300 grant, and Exact Target, a Sales Force.com company, awarded a $500 donation.

AHS Interact Faculty Advisor Heather Coffman praised the dedication of club members, saying, “These students are incredible and are truly learning what it means to be a leader through service to others.”
