On May 7, Brownsburg Community School Corporation honored Teachers and Support Staff Members of the Year in each building and department and announced this year’s corporation Teacher and Support Staff Member of the Year. Colleen Cannon, English teacher at Brownsburg High School, was named BCSC Teacher of the Year. Denise Hein, Administrative Assistant at Brownsburg East Middle School was named Support Staff Member of the Year.
Colleen Cannon joined the staff at Brownsburg High School in 2003 and currently teaches Pre-AP English 10 Honors. She initially earned a degree from Indiana University in Speech Communication, but was inspired to become a teacher after some time working in advertising sales. One of her students appreciates her approach in the classroom, “Mrs. Cannon always makes an extra effort to make the material she presents in class applicable to her students’ lives.”
Denise Hein has been a part of Brownsburg Schools for nearly 13 years, first as a volunteer, and then as a staff member at East Middle School for the last eight years. Her role as Administrative Assistant for the Guidance Department often expands to other areas of the building, including lunch duty for the 6th grade. No matter the task, her co-workers say Denise does exceptional work.
“Denise wants a job done well and always strives for perfection. The staff rightly know that we can’t get along without her,” Rose Rosenbalm, BEMS counselor, said in a press release.
Peers in each building and department select their Teacher and Support Staff members of the year. Support Staff members submit letters of support which are reviewed by a panel representing many areas of Brownsburg Schools to determine a winner. Teachers of the Year in each building submit an extensive portfolio which is reviewed by the staff at the University of Indianapolis School of Education, who then select the overall winner. Colleen Cannon’s portfolio will be entered into the contest for the Indiana Teacher of the Year this summer.
