Hendricks County Flyer
---- — If your refrigerator is plastered with the latest artwork from your mini Monet, you’re probably aware of the multiple benefits that art can offer children. Experts – as well as parents in the Hendricks County area – are continuing to explore how art can enhance the total development of young children.
“Children love to experiment with art, and the developmental benefits, such as hand-eye coordination and motor skills, are endless,” says Tamara Cox, Owner of KidzArt of West Central Indiana. “Drawing, and working with a variety of age-appropriate media also reinforce many of the skills that promote academic readiness.”
KidzArt, a drawing and art education program, provides supportive, non-competitive art classes for young children through senior citizens. “KidzArt teaches students to try new things, explore ideas and to problem-solve,” says Cox. “Young children can learn so much about themselves from the process of experimenting and discovering.”
“Art classes can encourage children to create something that’s pleasing to the eye but it’s really so much more,” says Cox.
KidzArt classes allow children to make choices in color and texture, solve problems and communicate in new ways. The skills learned in KidzArt class can also help prepare very young children to read and write by developing their visual and motor skills.
KidzArt is partnering with the Brownsburg Public Library to offer KidzArt classes for young students beginning Jan. 15 and 16 for the winter session and March 12 and 13 for the spring session. Weekly classes meet for 8 weeks during each session. Students ages 4 to 6 meet on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Students ages 6 to 12 who are home-schooled or do online school can take classes on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to noon. Each lesson meets or exceeds the National Standards for Art Education. Registration is available online at www.westcentralin.kidzart.com or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information. Pro-rated fees are available for joining during a session.
The Plainfield Recreation Center will also offer weekly KidzArt classes for preschoolers, elementary age students and TeenzArt for students 12 and older beginning Feb. 5 and 6. Children ages 6 to 12 meet Wednesdays 6 to 7 p.m. Younger students ages 4 to 6 will meet Thursdays from 6 to 6:45 p.m. and TeenzArt meets on Thursdays from 7 to 8 p.m. To register for classes at the Plainfield Rec Center, call the center directly at 317-839-7665
