Registration now open for Kindergarten University

Hendricks County Flyer

---- — Registration for Purdue Extension’s Kindergarten University has now begun.

The program is from June 16 to 20 at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds and Conference Center Complex and will include two sessions, one from 9 a.m. to noon and another from 1 to 4 p.m.

Any child registered to start kindergarten in the fall of 2014 is eligible to participate in this unique opportunity to experience kindergarten before the fall.

Participants will go through a sample week of what takes place in most kindergarten classes such as seat work, calendar time, counting games, weather report, letter of the day and more.

“(The program) will help children understand what is expected of them when they go to kindergarten (sitting in seats, raising hands, working with classroom rules, sharing, ect.),” Extension Educator Beth Switzer said. “This is an excellent program for any child who has not participated in an ‘organized’ classroom setting yet.”

The class will be led by Switzer and Purdue Extension Program Assistant Karla Smith, both of whom are licensed teachers.

With the goal of reflecting a real kindergarten situation, parents are asked to drop their children off and pick them up when the three-hour session is over.

The cost of the program is $25 per child for the entire week.

Space is limited to 12 children per session. Reservations may be made by calling the Purdue Extension Office of Hendricks County at 745-9260.

Checks should be made payable to Purdue CES Fund.
