When Rita O’Donohue was a child, the Plainfield native frequently came to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods with her family.
O’Donohue was raised Catholic. Her mother was Catholic. Her father wasn’t, but he came with the family when they visited.
“We didn’t come to Mass often, but brunch brought dad here,” O’Donohue said.
O’Donohue said her father eventually converted to Catholicism.
“I feel strongly that this place had something to do with that,” she said.
Her ties are deeper than her childhood as she also has a great-great-aunt, Sister Margaret Cecille, who was a Sister of Providence.
O’Donohue brought her own children to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods as an adult.
“There’s just something about this place,” she said. “It’s always been very special to me. This is definitely a healing place.”
Recently, the sisters hired O’Donohue to serve as tour and event manager of Providence Spirituality and Conference Center.
O’Donohue, a graduate of Ball State University, comes to the Sisters of Providence from Drum Corps International in Indianapolis where she worked four years as the events, travel and meeting manager.
Prior to that, she worked in the field of database strategy in Indianapolis.
O’Donohue and her husband Kevin have been married for 25 years and live in Avon. Their children are Ryan, 19, and Molly, 16.
