Clifford Matthew Gordon died Friday after a short battle with leukemia. He was 77.

Born April 28, 1936, in Lynn, Mass., he was the son of Bernard and Sarah Gordon.

Mr. Gordon graduated from Swampscott (Mass.) High School in 1954. He then enlisted in the Air Force and served stateside as well as in Okinawa, Japan.

After his military service, Mr. Gordon earned a bachelor of science in psychology from the University of Miami, and went on to spend his career serving troubled men and boys at several correctional facilities throughout the country. He spent 25 years at the Indiana Boys' School in Plainfield as the intake administrator, retiring in 2003.

Mr. Gordon was an avid bridge player and belonged to several different bridge-a-rama groups. He also loved chess and volunteered at the Avon Public Library to help young people learn to play. He also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and worked as a polling volunteer for more than a decade. Mr. Gordon was a lifelong golfer and a passionate gardener, with a particular fondness for growing roses and tomatoes.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Margaret "Midge" Gordon; three children, Jacob Gordon and wife Angi of Plainfield, Jessica Gordon and boyfriend Aaron Bozsan of Ft. Thomas, Ky., and Maggie Thompson and husband James of Chicago; and four grandchildren, Claire, Mia, and Walker Gordon, and Jackson Thompson.

His siblings, Anthony, David, and Barbara, preceded him in death.

Services are noon Nov. 16 in Plainfield Christian Church, 800 Dan Jones Road, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time. Arrangements are by Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home.
