Byron Allen Stockwell died Sept. 4 at his home near Bowling Green, Ind. He was 78.

Born Sept. 12, 1934, he was the only child of the late Byron W. and Norma (Stewart) Stockwell.

Mr. Stockwell was a 1952 graduate of Quincy High School. He retired in 1997 as operations manager for the Indianapolis Sherwin-Williams commercial and industrial paint facility and moved to Owen County, where he and his wife owned and operated Beamer Produce from 1993 to 1999.

Mr. Stockwell was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Plainfield, and since moving to Owen County was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Terre Haute. He was a 40-year member of the Plainfield Fraternal Order of Eagles, a member of the Plainfield Jaycees, a Junior Chamber International Senator, and was instrumental in forming the Plainfield Junior Miss Scholarship program. After moving to Bowling Green, he was active in the Owen County Republican Party and served a term as an Owen County Commissioner.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Mary Jo Hendershot; her husband, Marcus Creech of Bowling Green; and a cousin, Barbara Petro of Ellettsville.

He was also preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Margaret (Hendershot) Stockwell. 

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 215 N. 7th St., Terre Haute. Rev. Mary Slenski will officiate. Burial will follow at Mabley Garden. Friends may call from 3 p.m. until the time of the service at the church. Arrangements are with West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home.
