Hansing

Betty Jean (Nelson) Hansing of Brentwood Senior Living Apartments, Elkhart, died Saturday at Greenleaf Living Center, where she had been in residence for nearly three years. She was 89.

Born March 3, 1924, she was the daughter of John and Esther (Peterson) Nelson. She married Ronald F. Hansing of Elkhart on June 8, 1946, and he survives.

Mrs. Hansing graduated from Elkhart High School in 1942 and began her working life as a telephone switchboard operator before accepting employment at Miles Lab, where she met her future husband. She delivered the vitamins of choice to Miles employees as the company's "Vitamin Lady" before moving into a secretarial position in the personnel department. After the arrival of her first child, she became a homemaker.

Mrs. Hansing served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader, a member and president of Elkhart's Athena Club, and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school and belonged to the Ladies Aid and other organizations. She also was a lay minister in the Stephen's Ministry Program where she provided counsel to persons struggling with personal issues. Other memberships included the Winers and Diners and the Mr. and Mrs. Club. 

Also surviving are two sons, Ronald J. (Leisa) of Niles, Mich., and Philip C. of Elkhart; four daughters, Kristine L. (Thomas) Wyncott of Bristol, Lois J. (Harry) Eggink of Muncie, Janet L. (J. Mark) Hess of Indianapolis, and Carol J. (D. Keith) Bontrager of Elkhart; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary (Richard) Friesner of Muncie; and sister-in-law Jean (Dr. John) Nelson of Elkhart. 

She was preceded in death by her sister, Florence (Donald) Flagle, and five brothers, Richard, Dr. Charles, Leonard, Dr. John, and Raymond.

Services are 2 p.m. Nov. 8 at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home, where friends may call 4-7 p.m. Nov. 7.

Memorials may be made to the building fund at Trinity Lutheran Church.
