Joseph Wendell Elrod died Aug. 20 at the age of 89.
Born Nov. 26, 1923, in Putnam County near Coatesville, he was the son of the late Wendell B. and Ruth Bourne Elrod.
Mr. Elrod was a graduate of Amo Indiana High School and Purdue University, where he became an electrical engineer. Following college, he served two years in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Elrod worked for Penn Power Company before coming to Mansfield in 1957. He then was employed at the Ohio Brass Company. After 30 years of service with the Ohio Brass, he retired in 1987. He was a member of S.C.O.R.E., a life member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE,) and a 50-year Mason.
Mr. Elrod enjoyed working in his workshop and in his yard. He was an avid reader and loved to travel. In his earlier days, he served on the board of the Mansfield Playhouse and also enjoyed golfing.
A brother, Dr. James Elrod, also preceded him in death.
Graveside services are 10 a.m. Oct. 5 at Stilesville Cemetery. Services will be handled by Bousley-Hays Funeral Home.
