— Joy Jean (Plunkett) Johnston of Lakeland, Fla., died Saturday. She was 75.

Born Oct. 5, 1937, in Hadley, Ind., she was the daughter of Wayne and Sarah Frances (Phillips) Plunkett. She married Leonard Glenn Johnston on Sept. 1, 1956. He survives.

Mrs. Johnston was a lifelong resident of New Winchester, graduating from New Winchester High School in 1955. She attended Methodist Nursing School and worked at Hendricks County Hospital in Danville and later at Cummins Mental Health and in the offices of Drs. Cheesman, Heinlein, Clark, and Kerlin.

Mrs. Johnston also worked in the Hendricks County Clerk’s Office and ran as a Republican for County Clerk in 1988. Before retiring she was a court reporter for Judge Mowrer and a legal secretary for attorneys Howard, Lawson, and Wood.

Mrs. Johnston was a lifelong member of New Winchester Baptist Church, attended services at Amo Baptist Church, and was an active member of the American Baptist Church of Lakeland, Fla. She served as president of the American Baptist Women of Area 4 ABCOTS, where she also served as vice moderator and supported the White Cross Mission. Other memberships included the Danville Lions Club, where she raised pups for Leader Dogs for the Blind, and the Alzheimer’s Association, where she facilitated several support groups.

Also surviving are three children, Glenn and wife Angie of Danville, Julie Dumser and husband Dave of Danville, and Don and wife Lydia of Danville; three siblings, Beth Harmless, Darrel Plunkett and wife Linda, and Dixie White, all of Danville; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Benny, who died in infancy; and two great-grandsons.

Services are 2 p.m. March 9 in Conkle Funeral Home, Avon, where friends may call 2-8 p.m. March 8. Burial will be in New Winchester Cemetery.
