— Melvina Jane Carney died Thursday at her Franklin home. She was 96.

Born August 3, 1916, in Westport, she was a daughter of the late Louis F. and Pearl Mae (Baker) Yorger. She married John Caylor Carney on July 6, 1951, and he preceded her in death.

Mrs. Carney was a hair dresser. She had also worked as an auditor/contomiter operator for the Internal Revenue Service.

She was a member of the Prentice Presbyterian Church, now Sunnyside Church. She was also a member of the Brookside Chapter of Order of Eastern Star in Indianapolis, Sahara Grotto of Indianapolis, and the Murat Shrine Leisure Club and NAFE. She enjoyed sports, including watching basketball and baseball, and was an avid bowler.

Survivors include a son, Charles L. Carney and his wife of Michigan; a daughter, Charlene A. Carney and her husband of Indiana; and Lydia J. Moore Hatting and her husband of Las Vegas, Nev.; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one on the way; a niece, Betty Bowls; and a sister-in-law, Mary Louise Baker.

Preceding her in death were a sister, Millard Huffman, and a grandson, Justin Lee Johnson.

Services are 1 p.m. Saturday in the Ransford Chapel at the Indiana Masonic Home, 690 S. State St., Franklin, with the Rev. Charles Stanley officiating. Interment will be at Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Calling is for two hours prior to the service, with an Order of Eastern Star service at 12:30 p.m.
