David L. Jones of Avon died Sunday in his home. He was 87.
Born Oct. 16, 1925, in Crawfordsville, he was the son of Howard and Cressie (Grabman) Jones. He married Phyllis Holt on July 14, 1945.
Mr. Jones was a 1944 Crawfordsville High School graduate and enlisted in the Army that same year. As a member of the Field Artillery, he was proficient in the 105 Howitzers gun crew. He was on his way to Germany when Victory in Europe was signed to end World War II. Upon returning to the United States, he became a drill sergeant and trained new inductees at Fort Bragg, N.C., to be sent to the Pacific Theater of action.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Mr. Jones became an industrial electrician with the IBEW 481. His main employers were Watson-Flagg and Ermco Elec. His memberships included Bethesda Baptist Church.
Also surviving are five children, Diana (Jack) Halsey of Brownsburg, Nancy (Michael) Williams of Kokomo, David (Wendy) Jones of Tampa, Fla., Jeffry (Carol) Jones of Brownsburg, and Kathy (James) Lyle, Centreville, Va.; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren plus one on the way.
A brother, Donald, preceded him in death in 1992.
Services are 10 a.m. Dec. 28 at Matthews Mortuary in Brownsburg, where visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Dec. 27. Burial will be in Brownsburg Cemetery.
