— William F. Piel of Zionsville died Thursday at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis following a brief illness. He was 97 and had been a long-time resident of Danville.
He married Elizabeth Kadel of Indianapolis in 1940; they had two children and resided first in Cartersburg and then in Danville. After she died in 1988, he married Mary Louise Kellams of Greenwood in 1991; they resided in Danville. After she died in 1993, he married Phyllis Kultgen of Bloomington in 1994; they resided in Bloomington. After she died in 2008, Mr. Piel moved to Zionsville Meadows in Zionsville.
Mr. Piel attended Shortridge High School and Wabash College. He worked in the printing industry in Indianapolis until retiring in 1992.
He was a founding member of St. Augustine Episcopal Church in Danville. He was president of the Danville Conservation Club and once ran unsuccessfully for Danville Park Commissioner.
Mr. Piel served 30 years a member of the Indiana National Guard and the U. S. Army Reserve. He did volunteer work for Meals-on-Wheels in Bloomington.
Survivors include children Elizabeth Dillon of Zionsville and William Piel Jr. of Nesconset, N.Y., and a son-in-law, Timothy Dillon.
Baker Funeral Home in Danville is handling arrangements. There will be no services.
