---- —

Stephen J. Johnson of Plainfield died March 2 at home. He was 66.

Born May 16, 1947, in Lafayette, he was the son of the late Herbert Ossian Johnson and Margaret Blanchard. He married Susie Johnson and she survives. They were married for 47 years.

Mr. Johnson graduated from Upper Arlington High School in Columbus, Ohio, in 1965. He then attended Michigan State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in zoology in 1970.

After graduating from Indiana University-Bloomington Law School in 1973, he began working for the Indiana Prosecuting Attorney’s Council. He eventually became its executive director in 1997, a position he held until his retirement in 2011.

In 1998, he was honored with the Eugene “Shine” Feller Award, a sort of ‘lifetime achievement’ award given by Indiana’s prosecutors to those with distinguished service in their field. In addition to serving on several legislative committees, drafting and proposing bills, educating and mentoring prosecutors and other law enforcement officers (including the authorship of an Ethics Manual for prosecutors), and helping re-write the Indiana penal code, one of Stephen’s most significant achievements was to implement and oversee a statewide computer system linking state and local offices in the criminal justice system. Over the course of his nearly forty years of public service, he was also a highly sought-out lecturer, frequently called upon to share his expert knowledge on a variety of topics in the arena of law enforcement on both the state and local level.

In 2011, Governor Mitch Daniels recognized Mr. Johnson as a Distinguished Hoosier, a distinction bestowed upon those who have made significant contributions to the state of Indiana in the service of its citizens. The Indiana Supreme Court also recognized Stephen for his years of service.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by children, Brian (Elizabeth) Johnson, Glenn (Leigh Anne) Johnson, Marni (Craig) Steinfort, and Matt Johnson; grandchildren, Elyse, Christopher, Caroline, Rachel, Luke, Nicholas, Alexander, and Keira; sister, Janice Johnson; and aunt, Audree Wentworth.

Services will be at 11 a.m. March 7 in Resurrection Lutheran Church, 445 E. Stop 11 Road, and Indianapolis.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. March 6 in G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, 5141 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis, and one hour prior to service in the church.
