Dan Cushman Whitmore of Danville

Dan Cushman Whitmore of Danville died Nov. 22. He was 81.

Born May 15, 1932, in Sharon, Pa., he was the son of the late George and Virginia Whitmore.

Mr. Whitmore graduated from Washington High School in 1950. After graduating from high school, he worked two years at Allison’s Transmission as a machine repairman apprentice until he was drafted in the United States Navy during the Korean War. In December, 1953, he was discharged with the rank of Airman and enrolled at Butler University where he received a degree in production management. While at Butler, he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, Sphinx and Blue Key, and a National Office Managers scholarship recipient.

He began his career in 1957 as a systems engineer with IBM. While at IBM he worked with data processing users in planning and installing first- and second-generation computers. After seven years, he left IBM to begin a career in the banking industry. He was personally involved with the installation at American Fletcher National Bank of one of the first computers used in the banking industry. At AFNB, he served as systems manager, data processing manager and vice president and operations manager. He then joined Merchants National Bank in 1975 as vice president and operations manager. During his 16 years at MNB, he was responsible for the operational and systems support of the bank’s services and spearheaded the movement into more sophisticated banking technologies. In 1987, he was named president of the Service Division when it was made a separate corporation.

He retired at 58, which gave him more time to pursue a wide range of interests, including hunting, fishing, golfing, bowling, antique train collecting, and real estate.

He is survived by his daughters, Terri (Jody) McCoy, Tracey (Greg) Knuckles, and Tobbie (Kurt) Schoening; his grandchildren, Kasey (Terry) Hayes, Spencer (Mercedes) McCoy, Colleen(Michael) Maurer, Karl Schoening, Nick Summerlot, Steven Schoening, and Michael Schoening; great-grandchild, Landon Hayes; his siblings, Patricia Wilhoite, Marjorie Allen, Robert (Becky) Whitmore, and Kim (Nelda) Whitmore.

Services will take place at 10 a.m. Nov. 26 at Conkle Funeral Home in Avon. Burial will follow at Danville South Cemetery.

Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Nov. 25 at the funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made, in lieu of flowers, to GWHS Alumni Association, Butler University, The National Kidney Foundation, The American Red Cross, or the Hendricks County Community Foundation.
