Robert L. Powell of Clayton died Wednesday at Hendricks Regional Health in Danville. He was 85.
Born Sept. 13, 1927, in Crittenden, Ky., he was a son of the late Robert R. and Ima Thurmond Powell. He was the widower of Martha Hopper Powell who died in 2001.
Mr. Powell served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked 37 years as a supervisor at National Starch Company in Indianapolis before retiring in 1990.
He was a volunteer at the Belleville Fire Department; a member of the Belleville Masonic Lodge No. 65, Rebekah Lodge No. 155 McCarty, Odd Fellows Lodge No. 233, and Scottish Rite; coached girls’ softball for several years; and enjoyed watching sports on TV and playing the harmonica.
Survivors include his children, James R. Powell, Donnie J. Powell, Bruce A. Powell, Patsy Lottes, Linda Eickleberry, Teresa Wade, and Felice Gilbert; sisters Mildred Ross and Frances Ogles; grandchildren Traci Whitaker, Lori Brown, Joshua Wade, Dustin Powell, Patrick Wade, Robbie Powell, Tyler Powell, and Krista Powell; and seven great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death was a brother, Bradley Powell.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday at Hall-Baker Funeral Home in Plainfield. Entombment with full military rites will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Plainfield.
Calling is from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
