Calvin Robert Clear

— Calvin Robert Clear died April 19 at the age of 88.

Born Feb. 27, 1925, in Cambria, he was a son of the late John and Azza (Bogue) Clear. He married Marytha Dell Phillippe at Mulberry Methodist Church on Sept. 7, 1947, and she survives.

Mr. Clear graduated from Rossville High School in 1943. He attended Wabash College in 1943, Glenview Naval Air Station in ‘44, St. Olaf’s College in ‘44, State University of Iowa in ‘44, Ottumwa Naval Air Station in ‘45, Purdue University in ‘46, and Purdue University Extension in Indianapolis ‘46-47.

He served as a pilot in the U.S. Navy Air Corps during World War II and later became a member of the American Legion in Speedway.

In 1946, he worked at Ben Hinshaw’s Furniture Store as a television and radio repairman and appliance serviceman. As a pioneer, he began repairing TVs as they were introduced to the state of Indiana in 1949. During the 1950s he worked for Uffman’s Furniture Store. From 1966 to ‘68, he worked for Howard Sam’s. In 1968, he followed his passion and established Clear TV, a television repair company based on Christian principals. Clear TV became widely known and he continued television repairs until his death.

Mr. Clear enjoyed bowling and participated in many different leagues and tournaments throughout the years.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and later Messiah Lutheran Church of Eagle Creek. He volunteered his services to both church and family needs. He also dedicated many years to the Lutheran Child and Family Services at the Sharing Place West.

In 2004, he received The President’s Volunteer Service Award in recognition of his commitment to strengthening the nation and making a difference through volunteer service.

Additional survivors include children Daniel (Cynthia) Clear of Indianapolis, Helen (Dr. Charles) Hodges of Brownsburg, and Steven Clear of Sedona, Ariz; eight grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; and a brother, David (Phyllis) Clear of Indianapolis.

Preceding him in death was a brother, Paul (Alice) Clear.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Messiah Lutheran Church at Eagle Creek, 6100 N. Raceway Road, Indianapolis. Interment will be at West Ridge Park Cemetery.

Calling is from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Flanner and Buchanan-Speedway and for an hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
