Sara Jane Kellum Ryan died Thursday at her home. She was 73.
Born March 14, 1941, she was a daughter of the late James and Roberta Jones Kellum of Camby. She married Larry D. Ryan, D.D.S., on Jan. 1, 1961, and he survives.
Mrs. Ryan graduated from Decatur Central High School and Indiana University. She helped in her husband’s dental office and was a homemaker until she began her teaching career at Northwood Elementary School in Mooresville. She taught third grade for 20 years before retiring in 2001.
She fulfilled three terms as a trustee of Earlham College in 2013. She was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Book Lovers Club of Decatur Township, and Plainfield Friends (Quaker) Meeting. She was a 4-H leader, enjoyed Indiana University basketball, and hosting friends and family at her two-story brick farmhouse in Camby.
Additional survivors include daughters Luann E. (James) Heald and Melissa J. (Jerald) Hackett; grandchildren Stuart and Grant Ryan, Andrew, Morgan, and Natalie Heald, and Raegan and Sadie Hackett; sisters, Mary Ann Cottrell and Susan Kellum.
A Celebration of Life will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Plainfield Friends Meetinghouse, 105 S. East St., Plainfield. Interment will be at Fairfield Friends Cemetery in Camby.
Calling is from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home, 106 Shaw St., Plainfield.
