Aurel Mailath of Plainfield died Saturday. He was 97.
Born Nov. 3, 1915, in Gary, he was a son of the late John and Elena (Nan) Mailath. He married Margaret Guba on June 25, 1938, and she also preceded him in death.
He was a graduate of Froebel High School and attended Gary College and Purdue University. He worked in a family-owned beverage bottling/distribution business, and also worked 37 years at U.S. Steel in Gary before retiring in 1984.
After retiring, he moved to Crown Point and then to Plainfield.
Mr. Mailath was an avid chess player, enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and gardening.
Survivors include daughters Norma Jean Hoffman and husband Jon and Margaret Aurelia Wilson and husband Paul; a brother, Dan Mailath; grandchildren Paul James Wilson and wife Jennifer, Kristina Louise Hoffman and husband Larry, John Scott Hoffman and wife Amanda, and Thomas Richard Hoffman and wife Krista; and great-grandchildren Brock Hendrix, Luke and Audrey Hoffman, Addisyn and Olive Hoffman, and Johnathon and Matthew Peach.
Preceding him in death were brothers John and George and sisters Helen and Cornelia.
Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home in Plainfield. Inurnment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Plainfield.
Calling is for an hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
